    Kobby Beta 1

    Sunday, April 19. 2009

About a year ago I began working on a collaborative text editor for KDE during GSoC 2008. Since then, a great deal has changed in the editor and even more has changed it's supporting libraries. Now, just in time for the GSoC 2009 acceptance, I think the editor has finally reached a point where a beta release is in order.

    Obligatory Screenshot:

There are still a lot of features missing from the editor I would like to have before calling it usable for the general public (undo/redo support and infinote server control), but I am going to save those for a later version as I'm sure there are plenty of bugs to squash for this version.

As with any testing release, your input is greatly appreciated. Don't hesitate to send out an email to kobby AT groups DoT google DoT com or sign up to make modifications to the Kobby or Libqinfinity wiki sites.

Congrats! Pretty cool to see this app beta. Now let's see what apps could also use Libqinfinity ;-)

Why not add collaborative editing support to Kate?
#2.1 Gregory Haynes on 04/20/09 at 01:04 PM [Reply]
This was discussed when I started the project. Adding this into Kate would require making a lot of changes to the code to allow for things like controlling undo/redo operations. Theres also the issue of modifying the kate UI too much.

I find the UI quite strange (e.g. why can't I connect from the widgets that are shown by default, instead of having to open some menu or changing some tab?). Did the usability team look at the interface?

Good point, I just changed the left tab bar to open the Remote Browser on start.

Most of the development focus has been on getting the collaborative editing working, so the UI could use a little work. Thanks for pointing this out.

Oh nice, I've been hurting for something like this that isn't Etherpad. In fact, I was totally going to rope in a comrade of mine and we were going to bust this out this summer if neither of my SoC proposals don't go through. And yeah, we would be targeting Kate...Is that somewhere in the future for this one?

PS: If you could jimmy up a way to "import" an Etherpad and all of its history, that wold be neat. :-)
